The Story of Cael Embermage

Cael learned spellcraft from arena fire.

In the Ashen Crucible, sigil-smiths normally prepare symbols on metal plates before combat. Cael was a pit attendant who noticed that sparks moving through hot air briefly formed the same geometries.

He began practising with burning wire.

By the time officials discovered what he was doing, Cael could write a complete ember sigil in mid-air with a spear tip. The symbols lasted only seconds, but that was enough.

His Ember Sigil is strongest when Power is the supporting quality. Rather than becoming generally stronger, Cael compresses a secondary burst of force into the precise instant the score is determined.

He became a Guardian after using the technique to shield spectators during a furnace-wall collapse. Instead of fleeing, he turned the falling heat into a curved sigil that redirected molten debris back toward the empty pit.

Crucible crowds wanted him promoted to headline fighter. Cael preferred maintenance work and accepted only because Arena winnings funded repairs to poorer districts.

The Convergence has given him access to fires that burn under entirely different laws.

His notebooks now contain sketches made from blue frost-flame, silent black fire and one ember that fell upward.
