The Story of Hollow Duke

The Hollow Duke traded away his heartbeat before inheriting the title.

Nocturne’s lesser nobles once swore loyalty through blood-oaths that physically bound ruler and court. When the previous Duke died without an heir, the estate itself began consuming servants as unresolved oaths collapsed inward.

The man who became Hollow Duke ended the crisis by accepting every surviving oath into himself.

The price was his own pulse.

His body lives, speaks and fights, but no heartbeat answers beneath the ribs. Instead, the obligations of hundreds of retainers resonate there like distant drums.

Dark Court becomes strongest when Spirit is secondary because the Duke can draw on those accumulated promises to support another primary effort. He is not personally more faithful than anyone else; he is carrying a political structure inside his chest.

The title “Hollow” began as an insult and became literal enough to lose its humour.

During the Convergence, several ancestral oaths reacted to foreign Shards as though they recognised old territory.

The Duke has not told his court.

He has quietly begun visiting the Arenas to discover why.
