Backstory

The Story of Durgan Gatekeeper

Durgan has never won a footrace and has never needed to.

For thirty-two years he kept Ironhold’s Ember Gate, a narrow approach famous for attracting raiders fast enough to believe speed made them untouchable. Durgan learned that fast enemies commit earlier than slow ones. Their routes become obvious because they have less time to change them.

He built his entire guarding style around that fact. Durgan lets the rush begin, then moves exactly once. A shield edge appears where a shoulder expected empty air. A spear butt closes the only safe angle. The faster the attacker, the more confidence they hand him.

That is why higher enemy Speed strengthens his Spirit rather than frightening him. Durgan does not chase. He waits for momentum to arrive at the place he already chose.

The Gatekeepers’ Guild wanted to retire him after the Convergence opened a Thread within Ember Gate’s jurisdiction. Durgan refused on technical grounds: a doorway appearing inside his doorway was still, by definition, his responsibility. He now travels between Arenas carrying the old gate-key on a chain around his neck, despite the key fitting nothing outside Ironhold.
