Backstory

The Story of Orin Mountainborn

Orin was buried alive for nine days beneath Stonefall’s White Crown avalanche.

The rescue crews found him sitting in a pocket of air beside three dead climbers, tapping a slow rhythm against the rock so searchers would know where to dig. He had broken one leg, rationed a single flask among four people and refused to sleep because he believed the mountain “listens for people who give up.”

After recovery, Orin became a route-breaker for the high clans. His work was not climbing fast. It was finding paths after the obvious path had failed.

Mountain Root reflects that stubborn geography. Even after defeat, Orin can return once, not by undoing the loss but by taking the long route back through the deck. To him, being sent down is not the same as being removed.

Stonefall children know him from a different story: Orin once spent two days relocating a shrine because migrating goats kept knocking it over. He considers that job harder than the avalanche.

He joined the Arenas because Threads do something mountains rarely do—they create new routes without asking where they lead. Orin distrusts any path that easy.
