Backstory

The Story of Professor Volt

Professor Volt has never considered himself a fighter.

Brass Meridian disagrees because he has won too many duels.

Volt spent most of his career designing induction systems that identify machine faults from resonance before a component physically fails. During a factory dispute, he discovered the same mathematics could read people. Armour hums differently around a Might fighter. Mystic energy alters nearby field noise. Shadow techniques produce gaps where information should be.

His Calculate method does not reveal an opponent’s statistics. It tells him what category of problem has entered the room.

That distinction became famous during the Gear Parliament challenge, when Volt correctly identified twelve disguised combatants by faction without seeing a single face. He then lost to the thirteenth because the man had no faction resonance at all.

Volt keeps the loss framed above his desk.

He serves as a Guardian not because he is physically imposing, but because Brass Meridian’s universities trust him to recognise threats before students do. The Convergence has become the largest unsolved resonance problem of his life. Volt travels Arena to Arena carrying a portable induction crown and enough notebooks to alarm customs officials.

He is convinced the Threads have a signature. He is less convinced anyone will like what it identifies.
