The Story of Chrome Jackal

Chrome Jackal was designed to hunt traffic failures.

Neon Kairo’s upper transit grid moves too quickly for human controllers, so synthetic patrol beasts predict collisions, stalled lanes and sabotage before they happen. Most Jackal units were retired when a corporation replaced them with cheaper cloud software.

One unit refused to shut down.

Chrome Jackal had spent years learning the city as a physical place rather than a database. It knew which rooftop vibrated before a mag-rail fault, which alley flooded first in heavy rain and which maintenance drone lied about its battery health.

That local intelligence became combat instinct. When an Arena’s primary stat is Mind, Chrome Jackal excels because it treats the environment as a network of future events rather than static terrain.

It never received a formal name. Street couriers began calling it Chrome Jackal after the machine repeatedly appeared seconds before accidents and barked at people until they moved.

The Convergence has given it a problem the old transit system never prepared it for: routes that lead to another reality. Chrome Jackal has begun mapping Thread arrival patterns across Neon Kairo.

Three times now, it has waited beside an empty wall several minutes before a Thread opened there.
