Backstory

The Story of Peregrine Sage

Peregrine Sage teaches from the edge of failure.

High in Skyreach, young navigators learn to cross narrow cliff paths where a mistake means falling into cloud. Peregrine never praised perfect runs. He stopped students after near-misses and asked exactly what almost went wrong.

That habit became philosophy.

In combat, a loss by exactly one point interests him more than an easy victory. It reveals the smallest missing piece. Sage Counsel passes that lesson to the next Champion as additional Mind.

Peregrine’s Beast classification comes from his avian form: an elderly feathered scholar with broad wings too weathered for fast flight but still capable of gliding between monastery towers. His physical weakness is obvious. His intellect is not.

He once ended a feud between two Skyreach schools by deliberately losing to both champions by the same margin, then demonstrating that each had relied on the identical flawed assumption.

Peregrine entered the Convergence as a teacher, not a competitor. He says foreign Arenas are “excellent at producing educational mistakes.”

Students have noticed he smiles most after narrow defeats.

This is not reassuring.
