Backstory

The Story of Mara Nightwatch

Mara Nightwatch was raised by hunters who expected her to become the thing they hunted.

Her family carries a Nocturne bloodline with faint predatory traits: heightened senses, unusual healing and a hunger that becomes worse under certain moons. The Nightwatch order took Mara in as a child and trained her to police vampires, revenants and feral shapeshifters.

Other Shadow Champions find her unnervingly difficult to deceive.

She recognises the tells because she has spent a lifetime learning which impulses inside herself must never be trusted. Against Shadow opponents, that familiarity becomes additional Mind.

Mara’s Beast classification refers to the bloodline she keeps under control, not a full transformation. Her eyes brighten, teeth lengthen and reflexes sharpen under stress, but discipline remains the point.

She became controversial after sparing a captured vampire child the order intended to execute. Mara argued that a hunter unable to distinguish danger from category had become lazy.

The argument nearly split the Nightwatch.

She entered the Convergence because other Shards contain monsters with entirely different rules.

Mara considers this professionally exciting and morally inconvenient.
