The Story of Sporeback Toad
Sporeback Toad is a walking colony.
The enormous amphibian carries several species of symbiotic fungus across its back, each reacting to different chemicals, temperatures and magical energies. Verdant healers have followed it for generations because the spores reveal environmental danger before instruments do.
One variety reacts specifically to sudden positive surges.
When an opponent gains a bonus after reveal, the fungus blooms and releases a dampening cloud that absorbs part of the excess. The Toad is not consciously countering anyone. Its ecosystem simply treats abrupt energy spikes like an approaching forest fire.
Spirit is Sporeback’s greatest strength because the colony is difficult to separate into “animal” and “passengers.” Damage to one part is supported by the rest.
Children in Verdant Reach paint harmless symbols on the Toad’s shell during dry season. The marks can remain for years because Sporeback moves so slowly.
The first Thread it encountered caused every fungus on its back to fruit simultaneously.
Researchers collected the spores and discovered several carried genetic traits from plants not native to Verdant Reach.
Sporeback had never crossed the Thread.
Something else had crossed to it.
