Backstory

The Story of Needlewing Mantis

Needlewing Mantis can remain motionless long enough for moss to begin growing on its legs.

Then it moves once.

The predator’s forelimbs are thin, translucent and edged like glass needles. Its attack combines extraordinary Speed with a disturbing degree of spatial judgement. When Speed is primary and Mind secondary, Praying Strike aligns both qualities and sharpens them together.

Researchers debate how intelligent Needlewing actually is. The creature solves complex ambush geometry without showing much curiosity outside the hunt.

Its Legendary status began after a survey team filmed it intercepting a falling fruit in mid-air, cutting it into four pieces and landing in the exact place the largest piece would hit.

The team replayed the footage for weeks.

Needlewing ignored them.

Wild classification is obvious, but the Champion’s Mind score makes it uncomfortable to describe the technique as pure instinct. Verdant philosophers use it as evidence that calculation does not require language.

The Convergence has introduced prey whose motion violates local physics.

Needlewing has started missing.

For the first time anyone has observed, the creature appears interested.
